Solar

Description:

Solar is a wall and ceiling light cast in solid brass. A radial array of fins fans out from the center, and as the light passes through them it throws a shifting shadow across the wall around it. The shadow extends the object past its own edge and into the room, the way a facade activates a street. Solar comes in four configurations, and each one is made in an edition of six.

The geometry:

The form comes from the same computational design used in complex building facades, brought down to an object you hang on a wall or ceiling. The fins are cast as one body around a central lamp, and their spacing and curve set the pattern the light draws on the wall. Solar 2, 3, 4 and 5 each throw a different pattern of shadow. The body is cast by the lost wax process and finished by hand.

In the room:

Solar works as architecture at the scale of a room. The object is eight inches across, and the shadow it throws is much larger, so a small piece changes a whole wall. It reads as a sculpture by day and as a drawing of light at night. One Solar carries a hallway or a bedroom wall. A row of them turns a corridor into a sequence.

The life it enters:Solar is a piece people stop in front of. It belongs in a house that collects objects with intent, in a hotel corridor, or in a dining room where the light is part of the evening.
