Ramus 9

Description:

Ramus 9 stands nine inches tall, and it is the shortest of the Ramus Series. It is made in an edition of 10 with a signed certificate.

 

The geometry:

A tree is one structure from the root to the tip. The roots split underground the same way the branches split in the air, and the trunk is where the two systems meet and become each other. Ramus is built on that single rule of division. Each stem splits, and each new stem carries the load of what grows beyond it, so the whole piece is one continuous system with no joint that was added afterward. The metal is far stronger than wood, so brass never had to grow this way. I took the rule a tree uses to stand and cast it in a material that never needed it.

 

In the room:

Ramus holds a candle at the tip of each branch, and the flame sits where a leaf would. One piece stands on its own on a dinner table. Two or three cluster into a grove, and the branches cross in different configurations each time they are set down. The brass holds the light the way the branch holds the leaf.

 

The life it enters:

This is the piece for the center of a dinner table. It goes out with the candles lit, and the branches throw shadows on the wall that move through the meal.
